Re: Television Advice
I have a samsung 40" lcd, great picture, my grandparents bought the same tv but in 46" there living room is about 5' bigger. my living room is about 15' with viewing distance in the 12' range. So if your looking around 15' distance or more 46" is good. Buy the best samsung lcd 40" you can afford and you'll be happy. Personnaly I think anything over 40" needs to be wall mounted just for security of not knocking it over(or tripping over a pillow into it)
And remember monoprice has hdmi cables and wall mounts for very cheap. Dont listen to them at the store, I have compared $8 monoprice cables to $100 monstercables and see no difference. That will definately save you some money you can use to buy a better tv.

Re: Television Advice
Quality cabling is important, but overpriced cabling like monster gear is a waste imo...monster cable is the Bose of cable.
I use sound cabling from this company, haven't tried their video stuff but I imagine its just as good

Back on topic, 40-50" inches will be perfect for that distance. I have a 47" at 9 feet and it feels just right.
Keep in mind I've never heard someone say "I wish I got the smaller screen"

Re: Television Advice
With a 42 inch at 10 feet you wouldn't notice 720 vs 1080 so you might pick up a good deal on a 720. The difference in price between a 720 and 1080 when I was looking a few months ago was $600.
I personally like Plasmas. They have awesome blacks and typically have been better at sports. These days the differences are smaller than before, but if the price is the same I would lean towards Plasma.
Do not buy monster unless you like throwing money away. Buy from monoprice like previously mentioned.
