Yea I'm pretty sure the only reason these Earthquakes got so much attention is because they happened in a poor area, with poor buildings, which means lots of damage, which means lots of news, but Earthquakes happen every year.

If the world ends in 2012 there ain't nothing you can do about it. If you get struck by lightning tomorrow there ain't nothing you can do about it, go have fun and enjoy the time you're given.

There are 500,000 earthquakes a year, of which 100,000 can be felt. On average, there are eighteen 7.0-7.9 earthquakes and one 8.0+ earthquake every year. So, no, this is not the end of the world. For whatever reason, they are just in the news more.
