Suddenly the car company knocks on your door and says they just installed a chip in your car that makes it only take 99 octane.
Would you be pissed that an advertised item was changed without your knowledge or permission on something you had already purchased under the preconceived notion that it would be there forever? Note that it worked like you wanted before and you liked it, now it was changed without your authorization.
This is your property and a company changed it after you brought it home, that is what the lawsuit is about.

I think you are all missing the point of the lawsuit.
When the fat PS3 went on the market they said you could boot the PS3 with Linux and have a working PS3 with the Playstation Network.
But with the latest update. They are updating the firm ware and removing the option to boot in Linux. But! If you do bot update you will not have access to the PSN. This what it really comes down too Sony was letting people have their cake and eat it too, so to speak.
So if you want to keep the older firmware you are allowed too doesn't matter. You just won't be able to play online, stream movies or whatever else the PS3 does connected to PSN.

Soooooooooo....guess who else wasn't happy about the change?
That's right. The Air Force.
They bought 2200 of the PS3s back in November, and specifically because of their install other OS feature for a relatively cheap hardware platform.

Last month, Sony nixed the option to install a second operating system to the PlayStation 3, one of the console's original features. That angered some folks, particularly those who bought the console specifically for that feature, like the Air Force.
Last year, the United States Air Force Research Laboratory bought a whole mess of PlayStation 3s—following their successful assessment of the hardware—to capitalize on the system's Cell processor and relatively cheap hardware. With "Install Other OS" yanked from the system, the USAF sounds none too pleased about its investment.
Lab reps told Ars Technica that the change "will make it difficult to replace systems that break or fail."
"The refurbished PS3s also have the problem that when they come back from Sony, they have the firmware (gameOS) and it will not allow Other OS," a USAF lab spokesperson said, "which seems wrong. We are aware of class-action lawsuits against Sony for taking away this option on systems that use to have it."
Yikes.
