Yea, read it wrong.

Up to eight W88 (475 kt) warheads (Mark 5) or eight W76 (100 kt) warheads (Mark 4). The Trident II can carry 12 MIRV warheads but START I reduces this to 8 and SORT reduces this yet further to 4 or 5.

basic info

the largest US NPBMS is the ohio class, when frist lanched it carryed 24 trident II missles. it was retrofitted in the late 90 to carry 28 trident II(d5) missles.

the payload I could not find any info on.

but they are keel launch air brust muliti-warhead types, which only need the payload area changed to retro fit new technoloys and the adding of more warheads.

so who knows

but record goes to the russians wit the tyhoon. which in the 80's carryed 20 R39's. they know have the borei class which just entered service in 2010. rumored to be smaller lighter payload is

but its got to be improved i think.

Not really, still not sure one sub could destroy the face of the earth. Maybe 3 of the continents but the planet has a lot of acreage.

Usually when they say broad statements like that it means that if you weren't in the blast zone and were killed instantly, the fallout will kinda make you wish you were.
