2001 Ford F150 Engine Light
P0401 is the trouble code I get.
Online source says either:
1. My differential pressure feedback EGR sensor (DPFE) is faulty.
2. Bockage in EGR tube.
3. EGR valve is faulty.
or
4. Lack of vacuum in EGR.
The engine light has come on before like a little over a year ago before I bought the trouble code scanner and I've taken the car to Pep Boys. They typically just replace everything EGR related seems like, rather than actually troubleshooting stuff.
Anyways, since then I bought the scanner and I've gotten an engine light after I bought it once and I replaced some stuff but the problem ended up requiring an overlay harness that a ford dealership took care of. Well, when I was trying to fix it before I took it to the dealership I replaced the EGR solenoid, valve, and valve sensor.
Well, I just got the P0401 code the other day and the causes are listed above. I took off the valve and don't physically see any blockage but I can't imagine how it could be faulty since it's not that old. I also checked the voltage to the solenoid, checked good, I checked the resistance of the actual solenoid, that checked good too. Then I realized that when I replaced the pressure sensor a while back I cut off the two little vacuum hoses and had to replace it. Well, at the time I replaced it with a simple air compressor hose or something. Well, today I noticed it didn't feel that tight, in fact it felt kinda loose so I went to pep boys today and found a vacuum hose that was a little smaller. I replaced it and it felt much tighter so I was confident that the problem was fixed. I erased the code and went flying today at 1 but on the way back the light came back on....
I can't imagine why those items can last such a short period of time. So I wonder now, what could cause a lack of vacuum in EGR. Additionally, there is a little tube sticking out of the top of the EGR valve, if I took it off should I be able to blow freely into that little tube?Last edited by jmw_man; 07-25-10 at 04:02 PM. When you figure it out, I need help with my truck! I've got a miss at high rpm under load, and it damn near dies when I first take off. I have checked and worked on everything I know to do. I dont even get a check engine light to help!
Are you having any noticeable problems other than the light?

Re: 2001 Ford F150 Engine Light
That's hard to answer, I think I am but it could also be paranoia. An online source says if a "lack" of flow in the EGR is present then I would be noticing knocking or pinging or something during accelerating or heavy loads. Well, when I accelerating I can't help but feel like I'm feeling some vibrations or stuttering or something. It's hard to describe, obviously as you can tell it doesn't seem that severe. Anyways, online source does say a lack of flow in the EGR could also contribute to overheating...last thing I want is to get stuck on the side of the road.
Bummer on your truck, especially when there's no light to at least narrow it down. How do you know it's a miss anyhow? When you say you have no light are you saying that it doesn't come on or that you your truck is old enough to not have one? I'll have to brush up on some stuff to help give you some ideas.
One question, when you say it nearly dies when you take off, are you saying it does this when you take off like a rocket ship or like a mo-ped?

Re: 2001 Ford F150 Engine Light
I know the feeling, seems like everything is an engine noise or vibrations.
I have a check engine light but it doesn't come on.
When I take off it feels like I run out of fuel and then all of a sudden it gets fuel and lurches forward. Doesnt matter taking of fast or slow have tried both ways with no different result. I have TBI and the spray seems ok, I have changed fuel filter and even put a new fuel pump in it.
The other happens at 40mph+ in 4th or 50+ in 5th gear. Basically high rpm range, the engine stutters and runs rough as hell, more of a quick sharp stutter. If I rev the engine while parkedand hold it at the same high rpms it doesnt do it.
New plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump, I am lost. I checked my distributor and found a very bad and corroded pickup coil. I replaced that just cause it was in very bad shape, but thats not my problem.
I have a feeling mine may egr related or possibly tps.

Re: 2001 Ford F150 Engine Light
I had a 93 Buick Park Avenue once that did exactly as you described on two different occasions. The first time it ended up being the throttle position sensor as you mentioned. The second time it ended up being one of the engine coils. Does your truck have coils or a distributor? If it has coils there is an easy test, of course the test isn't needed if you've already confirmed that all of your plugs are sparking...

Re: 2001 Ford F150 Engine Light
Also, if you have a manual for your truck and a multimeter tester there might be a test for the tps to see if it's receiving the reference or signal voltage required, there might even be resistance test for the tps. You might check the price for a new one, if cheap enough it might be worthwhile just to buy a new one. Heck, you could buy it just to see if that does the trick and return it if not.
