Re: Name everyday habits....
Phantom usage isn't as big a deal as it''s made out to be. Get a Kill-a-Watt... you can see how much power stuff actually pulls. My phone charger pulls 0W when plugged into the wall but not the phone.

If you have a DVR satellite or cable box, you might as well leave it on. The power button really only turns the lights on the front off. They stay on monitoring your recording schedules and actually recording.
I have no idea where the list I looked at was(some consumer report group), but it basically went through tons of home appliances of various brands and gave upper, lower and avg power draws for almost anything you might have plugged in in your house.
I have very little that stays plugged in, major appliances, alarm clock, microwave, entertainment center(tv, stereo, ps3, sat. box) computer(monitor, tower, printer, router, modem, speakers)
The entertainment system gets switched off if I will be away overnight. The computer gets switched off when I am not using the internet connection. I dont leave any chargers plugged in, all my small kitchen appliances get unplugged and put up. During fall and spring my electric bill is around $70. I cant stand it when people leave all the lights on, I turn mine off and only use whats needed. I also have all cfl's.

Re: Name everyday habits....
Our first electric bill in Cali was around $60 (we have no A/C here). We leave all our chargers plugged in (again, I've measured with Kill-a-Watt... they pull NOTHING when not in use), a few light bulbs on overnight (front and back outdoor lights, entryway indoor light), and my computer is not on 24/7 but it is on overnight a lot of the time.
Basically, we used the same habits we used in TX... where our bill was anywhere from $150-$300. Only difference is we had A/C in that house.
I am sure I could maybe reduce my $60 to $55 by expending a lot of extra effort unplugging shit every day... but my time and comfort is more important than those $5. A/C is the #1 drain of electricity in most houses.
