I though it would be, the doc said I had it about as unlucky as I could and I'd be down for about 2 weeks, but it turned out not to be too bad. I didn't get dry socket and I only needed Tylenol for the first 3 days. I didn't even need to take the Vicodin.
But then another friend of mine only got 2 out, just the regular way and she had it bad. She was really sick for like 2 weeks. I guess it's just different for each person.

Re: Kids super messed up after dentist.
I had all 4 taken out, didn't need stitches and was eating normal food by day 3. I was fortunate though where they still hadn't broken the surface of my gums and there were barely any roots there, so not much effort to remove. The IV based shit was pretty sweet to be put out by, but I was fully normal again after about 20 or 30 minutes, by the time my mom had gotten me in the car I was feeling fine. Although I was drooling blood for a while since I couldn't feel my face for about 5 hours.
I will say though, the mother may have gotten a laugh but having the kid open and close his mouth like that and be talking so much is probably not a good idea. Good chance of messing up the clot.
