11-22-10, 01:49 AM #1Top Gear crosses the pond
So I watched the US version of Top Gear, and its like a knock off Rolex, it looks the part but it is entirely given away by the guy who is wearing it. Yes the segments look the same, apart from the fact that the US version lacks one of the best parts of the original, the news segment. The problem is that while the British version works because you genuinely believe that you are seeing three idiots talk about cars, in the US version it seems like you are watching three guys who are being forced to play the roles of three idiots talking about cars. Tanner Foust seems like the only guy on the show that knows anything about how to report on cars, the other two just seem like they are being forced to try to be funny. Yes, the British show is scripted, and yes the US one is too, the problem is one is the original, the other is just a goddamned knockoff.

I felt you can EASILY tell the US top gear is scripted, and I agree its like they are trying too hard to be funny. Brit's top gear seems a lot more natural and less scripted.

+1 The British version is....by far...my favorite show. I NEVER miss it (DVR
).
The American version seems forced.....almost uncomfortable. Maybe they will relax as the series goes on, but so far, it isn't anywhere near as good as the original. The chemistry between Clarkson,Capt. Slow (May), and the Hamster (Hammond), is really what makes the British version, so , while they can rob the template for the show, it's the people that will be hard to replicate.
Even The Stig didn't seem right......they should have come up with a different name for him.

i think it's sad and pathetic really. Shows just how lazy America is becoming. it's even crept into our TV series. So not only is just about everything we wear, play with, hook up with (mail order brides
), drive, eat..etc come from somewhere OUTSIDE the US..we can't even come up with our own damn TV shows now.
For Christ's sake, people watch reality TV just to "feel" like their involved in something and relate to it.

The British version of Top Gear is the most watched show in the World. Put it this way......The last Superbowl was the most viewed ever (it finally beat the MASH finale) with 106.5 million viewers. Top Gear (the original) has 350 million viewers EVERY WEEK.
They would be silly NOT to try and copy it.

Don't get me wrong, I love Top Gear, the real one. I'm a car nut. I'm just not all pumped up and shit giggled about us "copying" another show because it has great ratings. That's great and mad props to the UK for having an outstanding show. I'm more upset about the fact it seems like we can't craft shit and rely on hopes and dreams that a "remake" or a "copy" will give the same ratings here. Why not be inventive and come up with something OUR OWN?!
