I like this link as it showed the actual paper the LA Times printed that day.

to ad, OTL did an article about the announcement during mnf:
Former New England Patriots kicker John Smith forever linked to John Lennon - ESPN
Can't find it, but they were talking about it on Mike & Mike this morning, apparently Iggy Pop was doing a concert that evening and he came out and did a cover of a Lennon song (can't remember which now). Apparently before he went on, he was told of the death of John Lennon but didn't tell the crowd because "They would never believe me."

Re: 30 years since the Death of John Lennon
I know I will be demonized... but I never cared for the Beatles or their music. I know who John Lennon is, but his death means as much or less to me than the death of, say, Sonny Bono
I guess I am the same way about Elvis. As a matter of fact I can not think of ANY Celebrity who's death would effect me more than that of losing My last Hamster ... Bobby the Dwarf Chinese

Re: 30 years since the Death of John Lennon
It isn't just their music, though. It's their influence.
The way the Beatles changed their sound over the years, from the bubblegum pop to the edgier, more thoughtful and heavier sound, changed rock music forever. The bands that were heavily influenced by them were the very bands that defined so many different kinds of rock and pop. They opened the door to bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath on the heavier side, as well as Pink Floyd and Genesis for the avant garde, and Michael Jackson and Madonna in the pop world.
