Pit bulls are unfortunately often bred for aggression. A lot of those people who don't neuter their pit bulls is because they want and encourage that aggression that having balls means. And those are the ones who have puppies because their moronic owners think it's great to let their dogs fuck and then basically abandon the puppies (sell them on the side of the road or whatever).

So you get what you pay for, as with all dogs. If you get a pit bull form a real breeder who has selected them for intelligence and even temperament, and spent the time to socialize and care for the puppies then you are going to get a great dog. If you buy a puppy from the side of the road you are going to get a total unknown, it could be sweet or it could be a monster.

So unfortunately the entire breed gets painted as aggressive and nasty because of the high prevalence of assholes doing backyard breeding and creating monsters. So consequently you end up with a lot of attacks by pit bulls because they aren't socialized properly or are encouraged to be territorial and aggressive.
Are you willing to bet your, child's or other pets life on that?

You take a risk by putting any kind of animal in a home. One breed is no worse then the other when it comes to dog bites. Millions of dog bites happen every year. What you have to figure out is what was the cause? Who was actually to blame the animal or the person? Any animal is going to have the basic instinct for survival. If it feels threatened it is more then likely going to respond. Putting it lightly would be saying 9 times out of 10 the person caused the incident to occur.

I've had every dog that people think are dangerous and every single one of them were gentle loving animals. Then i ended up with a miniture pincher and hes a little bastard. Its the only dog in my entire life that ever attempted to bite me. Well actually the little fucker did bite me but he paid for it with his ass. Breed in no way determines aggressive behavior. When you get them as a pup thats primarily up to the person taking care of it. Of course there can be other factors but overall you get what you decided to make.

Absolutely, if you do your research and get a dog from a reputable breeder who can show you a bloodline of well-tempered dogs. If you consciously and consistently socialize the animal when it is young to make it used to pretty much anything that might come up. If you aren't a moron who listens to the "Dog whisperer" and thinks that his shit is a great way to raise an animal. If you DO THE WORK to make a well-tempered dog then absolutely you can trust it with your life, or your kids' lives, or your other pets' lives.

I have been around pits that were very kind, and met poodles and dachshunds that were mean as hell.

    Good for you I'll pass.

CHICAGO, IL -- Chicago police are investigating the death of a 56-year-old man who was apparently fatally mauled by his daughter's pit bulls.

The daughter told authorities she came home Sunday night and found her father, Johnny Wilson, lying on the living room floor, covered in blood. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said Wilson suffered numerous bite wounds on various parts of his body.

The daughter turned over four adult pit bulls and two puppies to Chicago Animal Care and Control, where the dogs were being evaluated.

Neighbors said there was no sign of dog fighting at the residence, and that Wilson had never seemed to have any problem with the dogs in the past.

No charges had been filed as of Monday morning.

Lol, and why do you think that is butta? Because its a fuckin witch hunt...dogs bit people EVERY day, but the news will only report pits, because of a reputation that was giving to them because of people like Vick...

This dog looks like he is going to attack you?

    1. Attribute your story, don't blatantly rip it off without providing a linkback. Follow the forum rules.

    2. You can give all the news stories you want, but that does not tell you ANYTHING about the conditions or temperament of the dogs. Where in that news story does it show you if the dogs were from a breeder, or were socialized properly, or treated well.

    3. 35 people die a year in the US from dog bites. Statistically you are far more likely to be put to death by lethal injection.

Also deputy, you want to know why pit bulls and other similar dog breeds are regulated?

It's not because they are more likely to bite people, it is because their bites are more likely to cause major damage. If a chihuahua bites you it's going to hurt but you aren't likely to go to the ER, if a a pit bull bites you it's going to fucking hurt. Because that's what the dog was bred for, strong jaw muscles.

Or to make a parallel example, why are 9mm handguns more strictly regulated then air rifles? If you aren't careful with either one you're going to get hurt, it's just that one has a much higher likelihood of doing serious damage.
