Re: Gun Advice Needed
I have both of these and you are right, they are fun and cheap to shoot. And once you get them zero'd in, they are accurate enough as well. The only drawback is they are a pain in the ass to field strip. But, if you can get over that, they are both a good investment for plinking on the weekends.
PS as i read the following post from Coors, hes right. Super chep un-jacketed ammo will cause them to jam. The feed ramp is just too steep, a trait i find common among Ruger semi-autos.
I also have a Ruger single six with an extra cylinder chambered for 22MAG, and that is by far the most accurate and fun of all my 22's.

Re: Gun Advice Needed
I'm in VA. Once I am fully recovered from this hangover I am going to take a shower and head to the gun store. haha.
And, yes, if someone was breaking into my place I would not shoot them. If someone wants to steal my shit I am not going to shoot them with a gun and risk killing a man. Also, the chances that someone is going to break into my place and attempt to hurt me are so crazy small that I am going to live life thinking thats not ever going to happen. On top of all that, I don't plan on keeping ammo in the house at all, so even going to grab the gun (which would have no ammo) would just leave me holding an empty gun. So I might just get shot because of that. I know, I am weird about this. Maybe once I get used to having a gun around that might change.

Virginia has the headquarters of the NRA and there is a nice range there (in Fairfax).
Why not keep ammo in the house? You may as well since if you get a .22 you will have loads of it cheap. You can lock it up fairly easy in a firesafe or lockbox.

Re: Gun Advice Needed
"Won't happen to me" thinking is exactly when it WILL happen to you. It's better to be prepared & *NEVER* need it than to need it & not have it.
Respect the weapon & follow the 4 rules:

I don't go anywhere w/o my pistol. I've been in enough situations already in my life where I wish I was able to defend myself. I was tired of feeling helpless. Maybe you won't ever be put in a similar situation & hope you never have to, but be prepared if you are. That's my philosophy going forward.
Now for an actual pistol choice . . . Glocks are ubiquitous, but I'm also a guy who doesn't follow normal convention. To me, Glocks are boxy & have an awkward grip angle. Also, I prefer to support an American companies, so my two .45 cal pistols are Smith & Wesson. My first is the first generation 4513TSW, which is like an original Barracuda, when people see it, they want to buy it. Never gonna happen.
My second is the M&P 45 Compact. The S&W M&P series guns are their answer to the Glock. All the same features & very similar design. I can't recommend the M&P to people enough. It fits the hand well, has a very natural 'point of aim' (ie, when you aim & before you acquire a sight picture, you're almost already on target), and very dependable. There are many Glock guys selling their arsenal & becoming M&P Guys. The other neat thing is they are just about in your price range. You can get out the door for about $450ish for a brand new 9/.40/.45. They come in 3 different sizes/styles. Compact (good for concealed carry), Medium, and Full Size. The differences are:
- Compact is shorter barrel/slide, shorter grip
- Medium is shorter barrel/slide, full grip
- Full size is longer barrel/slide, full grip
Each model also comes with 3 different "palm swells" to change the grip circumference to better suit your hand. S/M/L
