I know lots of people with att and t mobile that have to walk to a certain spot in their house or outside to get a signal. Sprint has good coverage but they have some real random deadzones. My brother has att and he drops calls all the time. I cant even remember when the last time I had a dropped call.
What do you call rural? I'm talking areas that you drive 45 minutes on a dirt trail. In the city it varies on location. I know people with all four of the carriers that can tell you the dead zones. It all matters where you us the phone the most. Honestly I had looked a AT&T not that long ago, but I hate that they don't have an unlimited plan. If mine is grandfathered then I will be ok. If not I will be looking at verizon.

The only reason this matters for me is I might be in those rural areas soon.

Also, AT&T is headquartered in Texas, so it stands to reason their coverage would be best there.

In a lot of places they both have equipment on the same tower, but they will do a study and convert any T-Mobile towers/antennae that would expand coverage, especially the 4G, which T-Mobile is quite a bit ahead on.

In one of the articles I read they said the new towers that AT&T will gain is the equivalent to 5 years of work. Something about 30% more coverage. I guess it's something to look forward to.

Alltel was my favorite, towards the end they didn't have much for quality phones, but the service always seemed good *shrugs*. Anyways, so any bets on how many years it will be before AT&T gets broken up into a bunch of companies again?
