Kanati's Movie-o-meter #2 - Beastly
Yes... I know this is the second Vanessa Hudgens movie review in 10 minutes... Sue me. I saw both today.
Dialog was a bit iffy in places... And a few places, the story seemed to be 'forced' to fit the fairy tale a bit too much. Mary-Kate Olsen as a witch? Ok. I suppose... The forced aspects put some strain on the suspension of disbelief, but overall... I gotta say I enjoyed it. It was a good update on Beauty and the Beast, which has been beaten to death over the years.
Neil Patrick Harris as the blind tutor steals most of the scenes he's in. Vanessa Hudgens as the love interest is sufficiently "girl next door" that she pulls off the role well. And Alex Petyfer, who's a relative newcomer (I Am Number Four and Alex Ryder: Stormbreaker being his other "big" titles) pulls off the stuck up self centered asshole role that learns to look beyond a book's cover to see the real contents inside very well.
It's strengths outweigh it's weaknesses. I'd say give this one a watch.
