Kanati's Movie-o-meter #8 - Source Code
Light sci-fi time travel.
Basically Jake Gyllenhall gets to relive 8 minutes of someone else' life and death in order to track down a terrorist plot in Chicago. How he does it and the circumstances leading up to and after it I can't divulge without giving away too much. However, I can say that the movie works reasonably well. The acting is ok and while I didn't see a lot of chemistry between Michelle Monaghan, they were decent in their roles and made the movie work.
Take a little Groundhog Day and mix it with Inception and throw in some quantum mechanics and you get this. The story was well crafted as time travel generally opens up a whole world of plot holes and paradoxes that are hard to fill without being contrived and at times downright silly. But this movie actually pulls it off pretty well with it's final act twist that while predictable, works. Especially if you follow some of the more "out there" theories about quantum science. The movie also doesn't try to dumb things down too much. They actually don't try to throw any hard science at the viewer at all. They simply state it as "this is what it is... take it for that and we'll move on now." In other words they don't pander to either side of the equation. They simply state things as they are and drive the story not with deux ex machina, but with real characters that you want to see through to the end.
I liked this one. It's got a few little flaws... but overall it worked. And it worked well.
