05-11-11, 12:47 PM #1Sleep too much
Right now, I'm sleeping anywhere from 12-14 hours a day. It's pretty ironic considering I used to be insomniac. Anyone know any tips for sleeping less? If I could get down to 6-8 hours a day that would be awesome.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Re: Sleep too much
man..i'm at the opposite of the equation.
I just can't go to sleep. It's not that my mind wanders or i'm anxious or any of that. My body just will not go to sleep until around 12-1 at night. I have to get up at 6 to help get the kids ready for school, then be at work myself at 7:30-8:00. I then get the damn "14:30 feeling" EVERYDAY...it's been that way since college and that was quite some time ago. I've just never gotten out of that routine, and it's nothing about laziness, because I was ROTC (so i had to be up early in the AM), but also an avid outdoors person (MTN Bike, climb, kayak, etc), played soccer for college, etc and of course partying and classes. I've just always gone to sleep or taken a nap when the body said too...Now that I CAN'T do that, I've been waiting for years for my body to say ok, we'll go to sleep at 9...hell i'll even take 10 or 11, just MAN not 1 in the AM..GAH!

Re: Sleep too much
they dont wake you up at all or you ignore them?
if your just turning them off once they wake you up you should get the one i linked or one similar which makes it impossible to ignore.
if they arent waking you up at all there is probably some alternative alarm clocks that try to wake you up in a different way.

Re: Sleep too much
lol, 12-14 hours is... not average to be sure.
1. how old are you? teenagers tend to require much more sleep than children and adults. 8-10 wouldn't be crazy.
2. are you sleeping well when you do sleep? things like apnea, or even video games before bed can seriously affect how well you sleep, thus keeping you past wake-up time.
3. how is your health? do you excerise regularly? do you drink too much? are you eating before you go to bed? exercise helps you function better and get better sleep cycles. drinking ruins your quality of sleep. carbs can make you wake up often too.
4. when do you go to sleep? if you're going to bed later and later every night, then waking up later and later... you may need more consistency to help your body regulate sleep cycles. try going to bed at the same time for at least a week, leaving yourself a comfy 8 hours or so before you have to wake up. teenagers have difficulty with this.
also try mayoclinic for advice.

I'll probably get that, Cojiro.
I'm 25. I'm sleeping pretty solidly for the full time. My physical health is pretty good although I don't exercise much. Mentally, I have major depressive disorder and schizophrenia, which I have read do make you sleep more. I drink maybe a beer a week (alcohol reacts badly with my meds). I don't eat before bed (about 3 hours beforehand). I go to sleep around 7-9PM so I can actually wake up for my 8AM class. That being said several nights a week I also have to be up to midnight.
I'll try Mayoclinic, too.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Re: Sleep too much
Get multiple alarms. Put one near you and the rest across the room somewhere. Set the one near you to go off first and the others in 5 minute intervals. What you have to do is train yourself to hear a certain noise. Alarms dont work for me either but if someone says my name or if my phone rings anywhere in the house im up.
It also helps to train yourself to go to sleep. Most people dont have an issue going to sleep. Once their head hits the pillow their out in under 15 minutes. That does not work for everyone. I actually spent a year training myself watching mariied with children while trying to go to sleep. Now every night i put in the dvd and im out in about 30 minutes.
You also have to set a program in place for when to go to bed. Changing the time everyday you will have a hard time training yourself. Personally i get to skip that part because my body does not required 8 hours of sleep. If i get 4 to 6 hours im good to go.
