Jim Tressel has resigned from Ohio State after 10 seasons - ESPN
I understand he was going to be fired if he didn't quit, but he told 5 of his players they needed to come back for the upcoming season to take their punishment like men. He could have at least had the balls to do the same.

College Football is big business these days, and a lot of the rules need to be changed. From that article the kids involved in this "scandal" sold signed items and memorabilia for discounted tatoos and such. In the meantime college coaches make pretty similar money to their NFL counterparts, and the colleges themselves bring in huge amounts of money from their football programs. The kids that are part of the programs though, god forbid anything happens where they make a bit of money off their names and stuff like that.
The violations are rampant in the NCAAF ranks, they just aren't heavily pursued most of the time.

In this case I think it might've been the right decision. Any sanctions the NCAAF hand out against Tressel will follow him to his next position if he takes one, and Ohio State being pro-active in having him leave might allow them to be seen in a more favorable light, allow the program to get off a bit lighter.

Paying players won't solve anything. You think a player won't take $250,000 from an outside source because the university is going to pay them a significantly less amount of money?
The Big Ten is already talking about paying their players a few thousand a year, which will be a disaster. Firstly, because of the reason I mentioned above. Secondly, I highly doubt you could pull off a rule that only allows football players to get paid without equally paying other scholarship athletes. That being said, a majority of universities couldn't afford to pay scholarship athletes across the board.

Don't know much about college football contracts for coaches, but I know in the NFL if a coach gets fired the payments still keep coming. Are college contracts like that? Coach gets fired and school still has to pay? If so, this might've been an agreement between him and the school.
