    Network Transfer Speeds are Crazy

So I at my friends place and have a game on my laptop that I would rather play on his computer, but since it's 30 gigs and rogers apparently charges you when you go above 60gigs a month i figured it was obviously faster and easier to just transfer it over the network.

So here's the network setup: Crappy wireless G router with no antenna so I brought my Airport Express and plugged it into the router so I had wireless. We are both running Win 7 but were not part of the same homegroup. I shared the file on the network and started transfering the game, it was going at 5 megs per second but I figured if I went to a wired connection it would be much faster so I stopped and just walked to the router and plugged my laptop in. I also quickly set up the homegroup since it wouldn't seem to work through the airport (I could share files, but I couldn't join his homegroup for whatever reason). After doing this and restarting the file transfer it was going at just over 1 meg per second... WTF?

Why would some router to wireless extender solution work 5x faster than plugging straight into the router? Crazy shit...

    I wish 750 a second...try 120...on a good day.

Until I reset the internet it was going at 40kb/s...exactly why I hate downloading games, it takes me 12+ hours.

Take for example now, started downloading a 8.3 Gb game at 7 PM, it's now 1:30 AM and I'm only 1.8 in.

Should be done sometime in the afternoon.

    Just insane.

That does suck, but this was networked computer to networked computer with no Internet involved.

Depends on what cable you used? What your NIC limits are (10/100/1000)? Also, can be a router setting? With what you described there are many X, Y, Z's. With out further testing we can't identify the source of the problem. Also, remember windows sometimes does a bad job of display the transfer rate.

I got a 25 foot crossover cable so I just plug the two computers together and on a clunky 7-8 year old POS laptop I get around 10MB/S between good computers its 30-50 MB/S makes reformating a breeze

I know the computers are gigabit Ethernet ports although I'm assuming the router is 100., either way it's the only big transfer that I'm making so it's done with at least. I have a crossover cable at home, never thought I would need it though.
