Re: your debit card number gets stolen....
Gas stations.
There was a big crime ring here that got a lot of numbers from having a universal key to open the pump card reader and placing a card reader with a bluetooth connection. Minutes after you got gas there would be a hit in Miami or something and you just got gas in Orlando. I'll see if I can find the news link. They started putting tape that "breaks" once it is bend or tampered with.
Here is just one example.

It is not hard to do if you know what you are doing.

I had my card stolen once before. I was in a hurry and stopped at a Chick-Fil-A drive through. I gave my card, got my food, and the attendant said "have a nice day". I didn't even think about getting my card back. I was in class when I went into my wallet to get out my student ID and realized my debit card was gone. I immediately called my bank, and they froze the card as someone had already racked up over $600 worth of charges with an additional $300 pending.
In the end, I got my money back. It all happened so fast that I can almost guarantee the person in the drive through had a scam running and this wasn't the first card they "forgot" to give back. Since my bank gave me my money back, the police did not pursue it any further, but they did go to Chich-Fil-A to kick around some dirt and see if they could scare someone into ratting others out.
Oh well... it sucked, but that is why you immediately report it to your bank.
