09-10-11, 08:20 AM #31My kids do earn it. They do chores, and my daughter even helps me with my work. That being said if I were a Hilton, Gates, or Cuban you can bet your ass I wouldn't tell my kids they should get a summer job at mcdonalds to learn the value of a dollar.

Re: People have major double standards with money
I plan on making my kids choose between working summer OR school days at 14 or 15. Make them for their pay for gas and cell phone. I will give them cash, but they need a work history. I am getting fucked up quite a bit cause of no work history, I've had 2 jobs so far, and I started working Feb '10, I was 19. So that kinda sucks for me. Value of a dollar? I will always give them trade offs. I gave my 7 year old cousin a choice last year. 2 Eids + Thanksgiving + Xmas + his 7th bday gifts combined for a 2gb mp3 player OR he can buy toys worth 10 bucks in each, he picked the mp3 player. Kids are NOT stupid, they are what you make them, parents just fail at a lot of things, and just cause society fails together, doesn't make it okay.
Remember, and I ALWAYS say this, "normal is what the majority does and feels comfortable, it NEVER means what's good."

By the same token I make ok money, so should I not spend it on my kids, so some day when they are 19 or 20 they resent me, like someone else I heard somewhere seems to resent their family? I am not saying they get to sit around and do nothing all their lives, but you have to have balance.

Re: People have major double standards with money
LOL. My anger is not them spending on me, honestly I got fucked over, compared to others. I was never angry at them for not spoiling me, I was grateful, I am enraged at how they are spoiling my other 3 sibblings. Thus the "double standards", plus if I went into detail with my life, you'd see a better picture. I'd be glad to tell you, but I know how people hate hearing about people's issues and lives.

I hate to break it to you, but in case nobody else has, life is not fair, and often sucks. That being said if I, my personal opinion, am making 200k/yr I am not going to treat ANY of my kids like I am making 30k/yr. In regards to "teaching them about money" that can be done regardless of how much you have, and how much you give them. Look at the Trump kids. I bet they know quite a bit more about it than most, if not all, of us here, and they were given plenty, but taught a lot.

Re: People have major double standards with money
The advise my brother and I got growing up:
..sorry wouldn't have done it in the first place
..if you can't/won't finish it, don't start/take it
..keep your word, always
..accidents don't happen, ineptitude does
..don't be lazy, there is something that needs to be done, always
..do more than others expect (similar to running full speed through the finish line, even if you are in last place)
..if you screw up, fess up
..if you broke it, fix/replace it even if nobody will know
..don't lie, cheat or steal
some of those lessons were harsh, but so is life, at times
