    alzheimer's/dementia

really seems like the worst fuckin thing that could happen to a person id rank it worse then cancer or aids forgetting the past/present geting mixed up thinking things that arent true/never happend

been watching it happen to my mom the last 5 years. and seems to be takin a big downward turn latley she forgot her husband/my father died. (5 years ago) and wont really accept it when i explain things to her. and of course not remebering/knowing someone you spent 40+ years with is gone then having someone tell you as you can imagine would be pretty fuckin painful.

i think outa all the things people try to find a cure for that should be the top of the list i cant imagine a worse fate

and cause of the diabetes i'm thinkin if i live long enough its gonna be mine to and i cant think of a worse pain of losing who you are and the things you've known i'd rather have a disease that destroys my body over one that destroys my mind

My gramps had alzheimers and it hit him quick and hard. He was leading a normal life (hunting, farming, driving) and 8 months later he passed away while confusing his daughters with his dead wife and mother. He was unable to take care of himself during those 8 months and family was unable to take care of him during the day so we placed him in a nursing home.

My mom would wake up extra early every morning to visit him, clean and shave him, and eat and drink coffee with him. My aunt would do the same after she got off work. On the weekends, a group of 14 family members would visit and take him out to eat. He never remembered who any of us were.

About the only positive thing that happened during that time period was him winning Valentine's day king the first month he arrived at the nursing home. He would confuse me with some long lost nephew or cousin and couldn't really hold a conversation with anyone. He would forget who he was talking to constantly and there were very few lucid moments and I was never around for one. It is not something I ever want to experience again.

What's really scary is what I saw on the news, researchers have said that certain forms of alzheimer is contagious.

    Re: alzheimer's/dementia

so doing a quick google tonight looking to defuse a situation thats been going for a week now her thinkin she has small children who should be there and wondering why they arent here

Tip 6: Manage hallucinations and suspicion

Hallucinations can be the result of failing senses. Maintaining sameness and calmness in the environment can help reduce hallucinations. Also, violent movies or television can contribute to paranoia, so avoid letting the patient watch disturbing programs.
When hallucinations or illusions do occur:

    • Don’t argue about what is real and what is fantasy.
    • Discuss the patient’s feelings relative to what they imagine they see.
    • Respond to the emotional content of what the person is saying, rather than to the factual/fictional content.
    • Seek professional advice if you are concerned about this problem. Medications can sometimes help to reduce hallucinations.

i just dont see how it could be helpful to lie i mean if your a hired care taker or nurse i can see it but not if your the persons child and a person 24/7 with them also wouldnt it just feed the delusion to feed them a lie ?

Lying is a harsh word, it's more like you're trying to make their life easier, as well as yours? Would you rather sit there and argue with a person with alzheimers and possibly risk sending them into a rage, or just say "they're in the other room" and be done with it?

It might be best to have her in a state psych ward. Private ones are good, too, but they're hella expensive.

Also, watch out for the freakouts that come with sundown for Alzheimer's.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
