10-22-11, 12:26 AM #31In terms of corners I think it goes back to Deion. He even said he wasn't paid to tackle running backs, he was paid to shut down the best receiver on the other team. It is somewhat a shitty attitude, but on the other hand if you are constantly counting on your corners to bring down an opposing RB then you have bigger problems than form tackling.

Re: NFL Rules: Roughing the Passer Penalties
Also true, and yet these days CBs are expected to bring down a RB when necessary. The best cover CBs in the league, Revis and Asomugha, are also amongst the best tacklers at the CB position as Rawr mentioned. And Deion may have been right in his particular situation, but in reality players aren't being paid to do any one thing, they're being paid to help the team WIN, and if that requires bringing down a RB whose broken into the secondary, that's what's expected of them.
And you're right, if your CBs are constantly having to bring down RBs then you've got a serious issue, but no front-7 is perfect. There's going to be at least 1 or 2 instances during a game where a CB has to make a play to prevent a huge gain, especially when you're playing against teams with faster backs who can get to the second level quickly like Jamaal Charles or Chris Johnson. Considering what those backs can do with just a little bit of space, I'd want my CB's to be as sure a tackler as possible.

The 2 best run defenses of the past 10 years disagree with that statement. Pittsburgh and Baltimore corners are schemed to make tackles. They do a pretty damn good job of it too. I agree Deion was the start of the only cover corner.
Slightly off topic but kinda not. If ya'll happen to watch any Steelers games this year keep an eye on Ike Taylor. Or rather try to remember he's there after he shuts out whichever number one is across from him. Dudes having a better year than Revis or Aso. He's shut down Lee Evans, Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon(combined for 9 yards against him), Andre Johnson(granted only for a half because Johnson got hurt), Nate Washington, and Mike Williams among notable receivers. Hasn't allowed a reception of longer than 11 yards to anybody, and the most anyone had was Johnson with 3 catches for 26 yards and 1 first down. He has one brain fart in Indy after Painter came in that was overthrown - other than that the man's been rock solid.

Several more headshots today not called. I wouldn't have an issue with it if it was enforced consistently. Saw a big one in the Houston, another one in the Carolina game and I've seen 2 in the Pittsburgh game so far. The calls just seems like they flip a coin to decide whether or not to call it.

Another shitty, wrong call hitting a defenseless receiver call. They really need to figure this out. I'm not too far from not watching pro football anymore. It's less about the players and more about the zebra's.
