I lived in Breckenridge / Frisco for a few years and worked the resorts. Love the Dillon dam brewery. Microbrews are amazing.

lol probably not what you were thinking of but have you thought of Arizona? it's not all desert. I live in Flagstaff (very libertarian/liberal, university city, all 4 seasons, 7000ft, 30minutes from sedona redrocks, close to grand canyon, 1.5 hours from Phoenix)
Population 70,000 right smack dab in the middle of THE SINGLE largest ponderosa pine forest in the world and at the base of the san Fransisco peaks (which, prior to eruption, was taller than mount Everest) and Pluto was discovered here (clearest sky and freshest air in the Country save for probably Alaska)
summers get up to maybe mid 90s, right now low 70s/high60s, winters get down a bit below 0.
