Re: Vietnam movies need to stop using this song.
Pyle didn't leave because he couldn't. Once your there your there until they tell you to leave.
His friend wasn't his friend. He was a mentor that had an understanding of pyle was a fuck up. The beating was because even with his help Pyle continued to make the same stupid mistakes over and over. So out of frustration he participated.
The insane part is a bit harder. Pyle had finally started to perform. At that point you figure the training has sunk in. We had one try the exact same thing taking rounds from the firing range. He got caught because they use metal detectors now before you leave.
The sarge pushed him because most times when confronted a person will regain composure. That being said even if he doesn't what else are you suppose to do when being nice didn't work and hes the only one with a loaded weapon?
What 4 guys? It was 2 out in the open and the other 2 were sniped. Marines aren't taught to go around and you have to understand with a sniper in an unknown position you dont really know what to go around. Marines are shock troops as such the job is take out the sniper so the next group doesn't have the same issue. If you remember they did rethink their strategy a couple times. One being go thru. The next is take up observation points and determine the snipers location. After that was cover and concealment into the snipers location.
Let me also add Pyle was the only thing that was unrealistic. In real life Pyle would have been dropped to a fat body platoon.

Re: Vietnam movies need to stop using this song.
Im almost certain the sarge threatened to kick him out? and when hes the only one with a loaded weapon you leave, block the door with shit, and go get your own guns. Or skip the door blocking and go get a weapon. What was the reason for not waiting for the tanks to roll up and clear out the sniper? I know they were bitching about it taking to long and they couldnt wait. I never said go around, they called in tank support, were told it would take a long ass time and decided not to wait but to push out and try and clear out the sniper.

I have great respect for our military but you are wrong unfortunately. All branches drop their standards in times of war, especially if the draft is in effect as it was until... 1973? Can't remember exactly. The USMC dropped their minimum standards of entry during Vietnam, but they were still higher than they were during WW2 or Korea and they weren't alone. Look up McNamara's 100,000. It was also called Project 100,000. It basically lowered recruitment standards across the board during the 60's. It was designed specifically to recruit (or approve draftees) that were normally below military medical and mental standards.
In world war 2 you didn't even have to have an IQ of 80 to enlist (or be drafted). That put you in Mental Group V if you were below an 80 IQ. After WW2 Mental Group V was disallowed by law. But as a way to get around the educational deferments in place at the time of the Vietnam war, they started allowing more Mental Group IV recruits in because it pulled specifically from the uneducated and poor sectors. Basically it was a one way ticket to Vietnam for the "Moron Corps" as they were referred to by other military personnel. They were called OFFICIALLY the "New Standards Men" referring to the lowered standards of entry.
Note that this was for ENTRY only. Performance standards may not have lowered, and by all accounts did not. Any of these "New Standards Men" could wash out during basic training the same as anyone else. But they wouldn't have made it in at all if not for the lowering of standards for entry.
This isn't a tarnish on the Marines as this was mandated by, in the case of Vietnam at least, the Department of Defense and it has been the subject of quite a bit of controversy every since. The DoD wanted meat shields and didn't care how they got them.

I know what your talking about and that was the secritary of defense that lowered the standards across the board. Which forced the corps to accept men they would disqualify but seeing as they couldn't say no i feel my statement stands correct. Every branch of service has lowered their standards on their own aside from the Corps. So i guess technically we both are right on that. Personally i think it was a bad idea and he was retarded for even considering it.
I dont know if you ever read the actual documents but i did know where to find them. You seem to enjoy the history stuff so heres the link if you havent see it before.
