That's because they're an easy sell to someone buying a new TV, receiver or peripheral and are usually things people are in a rush to buy if one gets lost or damaged. Easy to prey on people who are either already buying something big or are in dire straits.

Yeah, who wants to buy a TV and wait 3-5 days for the HDMIs they ordered on line. I wouldnt want too. I have shelled out and bought stuff at full retail knowing newegg had it cheaper and no tax. But to pay for faster shipping would break even. And when they start taxing all e-commerce, that takes away more savings.

Anything thats an accessory to a high dollar item is a high margin item. Your bluray player manufacturers put cheesy composite cables in the box, really wouldnt cost much more to put an HDMI cable and give people a cable that capabilities match the player. But the retailers fight against it so they can sell the cables separate.

Return policies work for cables when you save the receipt. Unless you used in to tie down the xmas tree.

I remember checking the employee price while at Best Buy for one of those, I think it was something like $100
