12-30-11, 11:37 AM #1strange issue with new/old parts
So about a month ago I came home and found that my computer, which worked fine about two weeks earlier and had been off with the PSU turned off and plugged into a surge protector, wasn't working. I had been thinking about upgrading it anyway so I never really bothered to figure out what the issue was, I was pretty sure it was the graphics card and I was going to get a new one anyway.
The issue was that when I turned it on it would turn on but nothing would really happen. The screen would blink and I would occasionally see the motherboard's boot screen but then that was it, it would go black and say "no signal". I also considered that it could be a psu problem, it seemed strange that my mouse and keyboard were both constantly lit up even when the computer was off. I am pretty sure they didn't do that before.
Last night I put in a new mobo, RAM, processor, and graphics card. The same thing happened, so I think its a psu problem. Im a little disappointed but I can test it out by buying one and best buy will let me return it if it isnt the psu after all, so I go out today grab a 600W (last one was 700, I was told a 550 would be enough), plug it in and the same thing happens. Now the only parts of the entire rig that arent new are the case, disc drive, and HD, which still has everything on it including windows and stuff.
I figured maybe the stuff on the hd was messing with it so I unplugged it but still nothing.
Could it be an issue with the disc drive or case?
There are a few weird things going on which may not all be connected:
-Cant get anything to show up on screen
-keyboard/mouse lights on even when computer shouldnt be getting power (unless I unplug it of course)
-CPU fan doesn't turn, it jerks every few seconds but wont start up. If I give it a push it will keep going but it cant start up on it's own. Tested this with nothing but the mobo and 1 stick of RAM plugged in. Tried this with both sticks.
-Power button will turn comp on but not off (could be an issue with the case button wires those were a pain in the ass, but I checked them and they seem right)
could there have been something I overlooked? I have the case speaker plugged in and Im not getting anything from it but my confidence that all that stuff is working isn't all that high.
Im running an AMD FX4100, a single GTX 560, and 8 gigs of DDR3 ram in 2 4gb sticks.Last edited by Graverunner; 12-30-11 at 12:27 PM.

Grave,
I don't have any bright ideas for you, but was curious if you had figured this out."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."
