Media Server Setup
Alright, I have waited too long to do this but now that the lull of the next few months is approaching, its time to change my old gaming rig into a media server.
Its still fully built and I have reformatted and reorganized my files but now its a matter of setting it up properly on the network. I will mainly be accessing the box locally through my laptop, main rig, or PS3 for movies, tv shows, and music but I would also like remote access for when I'm out djing and might need to grab an obscure song or two.
So my question really is what would be the best program(s) to help me with what Im looking for? In the past I have used TVersity for my PS3 to stream, but an all-in-one program for network access and secure remote access would be ideal. I also have a license of Kaspersky Internet Security I can slap on there for more protection.

01-17-12, 10:17 PM #2Windows home server 2011 does all that. I use it to stream my music to my work PC from home. I got mine with my Technet subscription. I think the regular price is $60. It is a complete OS that does a lot of nice things for you.

Re: Media Server Setup
Ok what I do, and I am going to recommend is:
for the local network just share each folder that has stuff you want to be able to access around the house. I share my music, video, and tv show directories for instance. Other computers can see and access these and so can the ps3.....
for across the internet sharing I use 'Windows Live Mesh'. Its main purpose is syncing directories between machines, but you can also establish a remote desktop connection through it...... very simple and elegant...-- Intentionally Left Blank --

Re: Media Server Setup
I'm using Windows Home Server 2011 also. I used Windows Home Sever V1 for a couple years also.
Which reminds me, if you want a copy of Windows Home Server V1 I'd sell it to you for like $25 bucks. That's half of what 2011 will cost you. Let me know.
