I found out why it was freezing my computer. Windows was using all my free ram 6 gb+ as cache for the transfer. At 97% ram usage my computer would freeze up. Updated bois no help, but noticed my sata HD running under IDE in bois. Switched it to AHCI and fixed my ram issue.

Not all flash drives are the same, some write faster than others. 5.0 MB/s is normal for a Sandisk Cruzer.

I apologize for this - I know it's a two year old thread and nobody here knows me. I was searching for something and Google just happened to give me a link to this thread and blah blah...

Anyway, enf's problem was that he formatted his thumb drive to NTFS. NTFS was made for hard drives and has too much overhead to efficiently transfer large files to thumb drives. If he formats his thumb drives to exFAT, which I assume he eventually figured out, he can then go to town and transfer large files as fast as his thumb drives will let him. I have a 64 GB thumb drive that reads up to 150 MB/s and it's pretty sweet.

PS you guys have a Digg link on your forum. You must be old like me :P

If the times are not in sync, the home group computers won't be able to connect. Make sure time of day matches in perfect sync.

Formatting the flash drive to ntfs accually worked. The fat format can't handle files bigger than 4 gb. Homegroup never worked for me, just networked the PCs. Bungle I will give exFat a try.
