    Hard Drive purchase

    This:

    Newegg.com - Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

w/ the $30 off "promo code" seems like a reasonable deal.

    Comments on the drive itself?

    Alternatives?

    Cheers,

Been using the Seagate barracudas for several years (price is always right). I have some from 2005 still rolling... 5 in all (one 500gb and 4 160's I used in a RAID0 for 5 years). I am about to put them in a raid 0+1 in my bro's computer (they are old enough now that extra redundancy seems prudent). Good drives, and cheap. Not the fastest, but then again in a world of SSD's we don't buy HDDs for speed.

I still wouldn't buy at that price unless you absolutely need it. Hard drive prices are still sky high and will take a while before they come back down. Seeing how I was buying 2 TB drives at that price, I would feel sick to my stomach spending $100 for half the space.

True enough. The $/Gig doesn't even come close to what I was used to.

But I've been wanting one for a while, and now it's pretty much a case of needing one. I've been putting it off for two months because of prices (also, with the supply shock, warranties were shortened).

I think prices will take longer to come down than I can wait. I'm no longer thinking about it in terms of what I paid for my last drive. Last night I found myself considering this:

    Newegg.com - Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

... which just isn't me. I've bought refurb optical drives before (because what's at stake, really?) but a refurb HDD with a 90-day warranty isn't quite my style.

So now I'm just looking for a decent drive at a good price given the current climate.

    I'm open to suggestions.

    Cheers,

    AetheLove
