    DD-WRT - Alternative Router Firmware

    Frankly, I'm impressed with it.

I was having a problem with internal ip's leasing. My bluray player needs to be a static ip "192.168.1.102" or change the ip on the dnla server every time to what it is leased too. Don't ask me why I have not found a better way.

So, I figure I'll assign it a static ip through my router. The Linksys wrt54g2 doesn't support static ip leasing. Another option is to manual assign ip's through windows on every computer. But the itouch, wireless printer, cell phone and random friend would not have static ip's leases. Or buy a new router.

Instead I choose another path, DD-WRT. I had slight concern about "bricking" my router. I followed the instructions and it worked out fine. The firmware contained static ip leasing I needed. There are a plethora of options surpassing the manufacturer's own firmware, too.

I use DD-WRT and love it. I hear Tomato is good too.

Yeah, I've got DD-WRT on my router and have all my devices setup with static IPs. Makes it much easier when you're routing different ports from the internet to different PCs.

This is what I use on all of my personal routers. Very useful for unlocking features that didn't come standard on the original fireware.
