    <--- Hates Apple, loves itunes.

I have ~300 gigs of tunes, all ripped from cd's, all in Apple Lossless format. Nothing comes close to the music management that itunes offers. Genius mixes, easy to sync with my ipod (more on that pos, later), and easy to transfer files over to my Android. Itunes does it all...flawlessly.

    But......

I will never.....ever....buy another Apple product. They can take their ipod, and put it in the ground with Steve as far as I care.

When I first bought my ipod (second gen. touch), I wanted a dock that could hook up to my home theater system via a digital connection. I found the perfect dock (so I thought). It had the Apple USB interface, and fiber optic/digital coax outs, thus allowing my receiver to handle the digital to analog conversion (rather than allowing the ipod). It worked wonderfully for about 5 minutes. That is until the ipod discovered that it wasn't docked to an Apple licensed product, and shut itself down. Fuck me....

I paid ~$125 for the dock. I returned it, and headed to the local Apple Store. One of the unichs told me that Apple does have an authorized vendor for digital docks.....one. What was working for $125, could now be mine for $350. Screw that. Never again.

If Apple made cars, they would make the best car on the road. The problem would be that you wouldn't be able to drive it on any roads that were not authorized by Apple. Not such a great car if you can't drive it anywhere you want, and really, not your car.

    Foobar2000 > Itunes

    FLAC > Apple Lossless

What can Foobar do that itunes can't?

I love my Adam Carolla Podcast (I listen almost daily). Itunes rules when it comes to podcasts....I have about 6 that I follow, and itunes keeps me updated. With ~20 years of construction under my belt, I can no longer enjoy the radio.....same 40 songs....over and over.

Lossless works for me. Sounds much better than AAC or MP3, and ~half the size of RAW. My entire collection (~700albums) is ripped directly from cd's, and not one song was purchased or dl'd. I also keep a shadow copy of my entire itunes library in MP3, for my Android. I have ~29gigs of MP3's on the sd card, so having the shadow copy works for me.

Foobar can pretty much do anything. If you can imagine it...you can code foobar to do it. Foobar will play virtually ANY audio format out there.

MP3, MP4, AAC, CD Audio, WMA, Vorbis, FLAC, WavPack, WAV, AIFF, Musepack, Speex, AU, SND, APE, (and, yes...even ALAC) etc.....Itunes can't do that.

You can also make Foobar look like anything, again, you're only limited by your imagination.

All itunes needs to play (for me) is Lossless and MP3. My phone pretty much can play anything (I use PowerAmp).

Does Foobar automatically dl podcasts from the itunes store? Very important.

I could care less about the "look". I don't spend hours staring at it, I just go in, get what I want, and close it.

FLAC is lossless. As for the podcasts, if you want to do it...you can bet that there's a Foobar plug-in (component) that will do it.

Not to mention that Itunes is more bloated than a whale.

I love Foobar, but, by default, it is just an audio player with minimal library management. Has major plugin support but is a pain.

Lossless is lossless. In practical uses, it really doesn't matter which one you use. There MAY be a small file size difference.

Re: Apple to restrict games/apps on next OS X update "Mountain Lion"

I wouldn't call it just an audio player, especially for what it can do... also considering it's small footprint. I do use Itunes, on my Mac...only because it's there, and I see no reason to install another program. However, if Foobar ran on Macs...I'd use it.

Foobar really isn't for the masses, it's pretty advanced and you have to configure it. As for ALAC...if I want lossless, I'll just buy the music/or rip it from the CD in WAV, and convert it to FLAC. Easy.

I don't need the Apple Store....nor do I need "genius" telling me what it thinks I like.

I love Genius mixes. It's nice to pick a song, and get a mix. I listen to them at work, so I don't want to spend any more than 2 seconds dicking around with the tunes.
