    Ivy Bridge

    What's the skinny, Quick?

    When are they being released?

    Which one are you getting?

Should I wait for the second generation of them?

    The specs look incredible....

You have no choice....you are in Canada....lol.

From what I understand (which admittedly is very little), Ivy Bridge is sort of the second generation of Sandy Bridge. The performance numbers I have seen are impressive. Something like 50% less power consumption and 30% performance increase over Sandy Bridge, while running cooler right out of the box.

If only there was someone who truly knew what was up with this new chip who could post up and fill us all in.

    Re: Ivy Bridge

Ivy Bridge will be the last of the CPUs on the socket 1155 platform. They have a complete lineup of CPUs coming out next month. Intel released that they will be launched on 3/23 and available for purchase on 4/29.

Intel Ivy Bridge Processors To Launch March 23 2012 | PC Perspective

They will run at 77w vs 95w of the current Sandy Bridge platform and are 22nm vs 32nm. The flagship CPU out of the Ivy Bridge lineup will be the Core i7-3770k, which is going to replace the Core i7-2700k as the King of the 1155 CPUs. Seeing how both Sandy Bridge and Sandy Bridge-E showed excellent overclocking results, I would expect nothing different from Ivy Bridge.

As with anything, wait for the reviews to buy. Based on the specs, it requires lower power and should generate less heat, so it is already a win over the 2600/2700k if you are buying a complete platform. Upgrading your 2600/2700k, on the other hand, might show minimal gains.

Either way, if it is a solid performer, I will likely upgrade as it should bring lower temps with water cooling, which is what I am all about. It SHOULD be able to clock as high without wanting to light my case on fire like the 2600k sometimes want to do when I am under load.

It looks like the Core i5-3570k will be the best buy for gamers, replacing what has become the sweet spot for gaming PCs, the Core i5-2500k. It will also be a quad core CPU (no hyper-threading) with an unlocked multiplier like the other "k" series and will only cost $225.

Now, the sad truth about Ivy Bridge is that Intel has purposely delayed the release of Ivy Bridge for months and months because sadly, AMD just hasn't released anything that can beat out the current Sandy Bridge lineup. So instead of pushing through with releasing the latest and greatest, the shelved it for a while and let us all keep buying the current product. It isn't like buying Sandy Bridge is BAD. Pretty much everyone that has bought either the 2500/2600/2700 K series CPUs has been very happy with them. They are solid performers, are affordable, and overclock like the Boss! But still, it just reminded me that Intel is a business, and even if the consumers WANT the newest product, sometimes it is better for business for them to hold on to it for a while and wait to see what the market brings out. Competition is good, but AMD just doesn't deliver anymore, so the consumer gets punished by having to play the waiting game with Intel.

Yep, two months into my i5/560ti SLI build and I am looking at saving for a new i7 and 680... that's how markets work though right?

Figure the 2500k and dual 560ti's will make a nice gaming/media rig for the TV...

Your i5 and dual 560's will run almost anything out today on full. Not sure it's worth going to the i7/680 unless you want to do it for fun.

For media rig for TV, I'd go with something quieter than dual 560's.

Yeah it smokes most games, BF3 I run with SBAO and with AA turned down (x2 i think)... so I could at least turn that up and run HBAO

The media rig in question is in the basement room. My living room media rig is aiming for solid state and silence... Basement rig can make some noise, especially if gaming on my 32" LCD TV! I mainly want a single 580 (it costs as much as my 560ti's and has twice the number of processors cores) ... the i7 I may get down the road if I don't just upgrade the whole platform at that time. The other issue I may be able to part out one of those 560's to my brother (one 560ti ran BF3 on high) and try to "quiet" the gaming/media rig a bit. I doubt there will ever be a passive cooling option for the 560ti.
