Re: UPS for gaming rig?
I bought, years ago, a used APC Smart-UPS. It's 1400 VA. It's Compaq-branded, but other than the decal it's the same.
With two large lead-acid batteries in it, it weights rather a lot. I had to get new batteries for it shortly after I got it. Was about $60 at the time.
Had to do that again years later. Was more expensive that time. Brownouts and surges don't bother me. I've run my machine, the router, and a mini-server for 30 minutes in a complete blackout with no trouble, and the LEDs said I still had more than half the battery left. Running a personal machine for an hour off-line is not what these things are designed for, but it works great.
Has been worth every penny. This sort of UPS goes for $500 - $600 new, but if you look around you can get them for a song. Other than the batteries, there isn't much which wears out.
Cheers,
