    CPU too hot?

So I just moved into a new house and during the move my computer broke. I just got it back today and it seems to be running fine. While hooking it up I noticed that the CPU heat-sink was a bit crooked so I lightly tried to see if I could turn it back. It moved so I tried to see if there was anyway to tell if there was thermal paste, with out taking off the heat-sink, and it kind of looked like there was but I am not too sure. I pulled up Core Temp and CPU-Z to see what the temp and voltage are. The voltage is about .96V and temp is about 30*C. I have an Antec Twelve Hundred case and a Cooler Master V6 GT. Is the temp too high for the voltage?

    Thanks for any help,
    DAVID(GEN)

30C is plenty cool for any CPU. .96v is undervolted... (possibly automatic; reflects the cool temp, were you idling?) You should check CPU-Z at load?

More information (CPU, stock or overclocked) would be helpful, but, in general, 30 degrees C at idle is fine. What are your temps under load? Run Prime 95 or a similar stress program and monitor your temps.

Better yet, remove your CPU cooler, clean off the old thermal paste, and apply fresh paste. Why take a chance with something so basic and simple?

    its stock
I just ran Prime 95 In-place large FFTs for 10 min and the temp got up to 46C and stayed there

I know I could do that but I have never done that before and from my understanding it's a hassle to take off the V6 and I'm worried I'd put on too little/much paste.

I push my i5 3.3/3.7 to 4.6/4.8 and it never breaks 70C. Theoretically you shouldn't worry until after 80C, and even then, damage is over/around 100C for many CPUs at which point it throttles anyway...

    30-46 is awesome.

I second the resetting of thermal compound... if it is oldish and wiggly that is not a good sign.

What kind of CPU is it?

Ya I may do that tomorrow if I can find my thermal paste... haha found it. I got Arctic Cooling MX-2 and Spire SP-700. Is ont better than the other?

Wow I thought I put that somewhere. I have a AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition @3.4 Ghz

30-46C is nice and cool for that CPU. You can push that bastard up over 90.

Spire is a genericish brand, so their compound is a repackaged generic of some sort.

AC is a reputable company and I like the products I have gotten from them, I know AC Arctic Silver 5 is my compound of choice (tests well and cheap).

I would google it, somebody has made charts for those two compounds I am sure... or just roll with AC is trustworthy and my old compound is ... old.
