Actually, I no longer am constrained by the software I needed to run. I might still do that research for fun, but I've decided to switch degrees to Cyber Engineering (better job market).
I basically would want to use Linux now for fun. It's seems like I might enjoy it more when I'm not having to use it, but rather getting to choose to use it. It was a pain and a half to get programs I wanted to run in Scientific. That's because, generally speaking, your local group at a University or a research center, takes the base install and modifies it to suit their needs. My university actually use command line Unix since it's what everyone here is comfortable with.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Have LMDE installed on my extra SSD, but have been fooling around mainly with it on a VM...cause I'm lazy. Liking it so far. Not liking updating on shitty dorm webz though.

Re: Linux
I ended up putting Ubuntu on a media machine with xbmc and have been enjoying it a lot lately. Not exactly what a someone with more knowledge of Linux should pick by default, but the fact they are trying out steam on Ubuntu specifically has me intrigued.

Love that Gabe hates Windows 8, lol.

Re: Linux
Damnit.
I was in on this discussion in July. White's playing around w/a Mint variant and I'm still running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
So I just ordered a WD Black 1T drive.
It should be here Tuesday. I'm going to install something Debian-ish.
I'm considering:
(1) Ubuntu's latest LTS (12.04)
(2) Mint (a mainstream version)
(3) Something else you can't wait to talk me into.
I hate Unity. I will require a traditional DE. I'm used to Gnome. I don't prefer KDE.
I hear that switching Ubuntu 12.04 to standard Gnome behaviour is easy to do - but I hear lots of things. I'm perfectly capable of editing my xorg.conf, but I'm also perfectly capable of clawing my eyes out from frustration when I'm required to go dumpster-diving through config files every time the system updates. If it's not a workable default, I don't want it.
I have no idea how to judge the long-term viability of Cinnamon or Mate; or if they have differences that would matter to me. Anyone have opinions?
I will most likely want to run the proprietary NVidia driver. I had no trouble doing that w/Ubuntu until I moved up to 10.04. Before 10.04, when I had to config it myself, it worked fine. As of 10.04 the system offers it as an option - and it won't work.
I love Ubuntu's repositories. They're huge. Does Mint rely solely on its own repos, or would I also have access to the Ubuntu repos?
Solicitously,
