I've used 10k, 7200, 5400, and SSD. For gaming itself it really makes little difference except load times. But if you are like myself and tend to load your machine up with a lot of stuff OS load/reboot times can be noticeably slower on 5400RPM

I've got a samsung series 7 with the 640 video card. Picked it up for $1,000. It gets hot. Very hot. But it plays most games OK. Not great. The 650M is a faster card but you'll lose battery and generate more heat.

can you just build a micro atx, and buy a basic lappy for school.

you can make a super nice mirco for like 600, scale down as needed.
