    Refurbished Componnent

    Hi All,

I am contemplating the purchase of another GTX 580, it is on sale refurbished from new egg. Has anyone had a horror story purchasing a refurbished item?

How much is it? The 660ti just got released and dwarfs the 580 and is around 300 bucks. it has 1300 cores, the 580 is about half that.

The only downside I've seen with refurb's is the loss of the normal factory warranty.

The 660ti is a bit better however this is $365 and I already have its sister card lined up.

Redacted. I misunderstood something in the specs. tweaktown has benchies showing it outperform a 580 but not by a hell of a lot; thus I doubt an SLI configuration of 580's would be lesser. Sorry.

Umm, I"m not seeing anything that shows a 660 ti outperforming sli 580's. A single 660ti has better average FPS but a lower minimum that a single 580...

Further it has significantly faster clocks, more pixel pipelines, etc. The 660ti is a much better buy than a second 580 at 65 more dollars.

It's not a bit better, it is way better. The 6xx series has a much greater level of technology; far ahead of the previous generations.

Um, I hate to point this out but they are testing against a Single GTX 580 in that test, in single card terms in that bench mark the 660TI is 2-3 FPS faster than a 580 GTX. Kepler is a Fermi die shrink so the actual new feature set is negligible. So to get roughly the same performance I would have to buy 2x GTX 660ti. I don't want to spend $600 to get the same level of performance as an SLI of my setup. My power bill is also included in my rental agreement.

No problem man, we all have moments like that. Back to the original question should I trust a refurbished item from newegg and if yes should I buy the extended warranty for it?

On that note I have been tempted, but always decided against it. But I don't know any horror stories buying refurbished and in fact have friends who look for refurbished equipment to save money.
