I just did the same for my in-laws. They bought the PC... Had it delivered to me... cleaned up the bloat (which was surprisingly little) and got it ready for them. We'll run it down to them in a couple weeks. Then all I have to do is transfer their documents, favorites, etc and they'll be set. Dell also sent a shipping label to send their old PC back for recycling. I'll secure wipe the HD and box it up and send it off. Need to do that with another one of their PCs they still have hanging around in their office. Might just ship both PCs to Dell if I can find a big enough box.

Yeah. I've done this before too.
I never knew about the "ship back for recycling" that Dell has, that's pretty nice. It's often the case that I can wipe the drive and re-install from scratch to wind up with a machine suitable for donation to someone. There's one sitting here that I'm giving to my God-son next time I visit. My brother got three years of use out of an HP. For all I know, a women's shelter is still using one I gave them a while ago.
In the case of a dead box, I usually pull the HDD and take the magnets out. Those magnets are awesome. The disassembled platters can be fun too - and sufficient abuse is an effective data-security protocol. :)
I'm not sure what my uncle's replacing. Could be I'll have another refurb to donate.
Cheers,
