So, apparently...I can't get Windows Live to update. I've uninstalled and reinstalled.

Wiki says this is the latest stable version:

2012 (Build 16.4.3505.0912) / October 2, 2012; 35 days ago

I know what it is.

I'm just saying I've had the same problem with GFWL, it says I need to update, it doesn't update, I can't use online features and uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't work.

Microsoft is in the process of phasing out Messenger in favor of Skype. Don't kill yourself... you'll be migrating to Skype.

Yes and no. They're integrating the WL ID for all of their products. I use the same ID for Office, logging into W8 on my laptop (going back to W7 soon), and for playing games. You'll probably have to integrate your Skype with WL soon.
