    Modem security

My parents have a wireless modem currently running WEP. I would like to change that to WPA, but I don't know if I can. Would it work just like with a router where I can login?
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

It would really depend. Some providers will let you, most won't. You also might check the support site for their provider. They might have information there.

    Re: Modem security

Tbh I don't see why the provider would care one way or the other if the hardware and ui support it (they would really frown on flashing the firmware .:experience:.)

The other question to answer is to ensure that the devices connecting to it can handle WPA (might as well make it WPA2) if you can.

As for changing the modem settings, if you don't know the root password and username a quick Google can generally turn that up based on model.

WPA2 set up and MAC address filtering. Better UI than I was expecting.

Yes, WEP is a joke to break into. WPA2 is alittle more difficult. It is to keep the honest people out.

That's true of almost all such measures though.

    Re: Modem security

WPA2 is quite a bit more difficult, although it's getting easier and easier now with the processing power of GPUs. WEP takes 15 minutes, WPA a couple days... I've not tried to crack my WPA2 key.

    Re: Modem security

There are script kiddy programs you can get that can crack WEP in about 5 minutes now. When one of my friends was visiting, he used one to connect to my internet while I was getting the PW for him.
