Spaz's New Toy..
Got the itch to build a new system here as well..
Here are the goodies so far:
Case:
Corsair 600T in white
PSU:
Corsair AX850
CPU:
Intel i7-3930K
Motherboard:
Asus Ramage IV Extreme
Still deciding on some of the other parts, but I'll be reusing a few Intel 80GB SSDs, and a 3 TB HD. I will probably also roll with the 660 Ti I have for a bit as well.
Memory is probably going to be Corsair Dominator Platinum (32GB).
For a cooler I am looking at the Corsair H100i unless there is a better suggestion.

Re: Spaz's New Toy..
Any reason your going with the socket 2011 line instead of the 1155? Just curious. 1155 is less expensive and for gaming, generally just as good if not a bit better. For heavily multithreaded applications or memory/pci bus, the 2011 is generally the better choice.
It's a nice processor but expensive.

Spaz's New Toy..
If I hadn't gotten the 3930K I still would have gone for the 3820. The price on that is in line with the 3770K.
I do a significant amount of encoding and transcoding, not just as a hobby but for my profession. Hence beefier and more threads.

Re: Spaz's New Toy..
Retro? Not sure about that one. This case is pretty sharp though and I have had my eye on it for a while.
Work in progress..
Mounted the board and a couple SSDs, and removed the top fan in preparation for a radiator.
Still waiting for the PSU to get here and need to buy memory, a cooler, and of course some bling. I will probably make a trip by Fry's tomorrow and grab some goodies.
I saved some money on the motherboard with an open box item, and I hope that wasn't a mistake. Whoever had it before left a screw and standoff in it that they apparently couldn't get out. Amateurs. I can return it if I run into any issues and it still carries full warranty.
I hope to have it all wrapped up this week. I'm thinking I will go ahead and throw Windows 8 on there too even though I have a couple extra copies of 7 still.Guyver liked this post

Re: Spaz's New Toy..
I think there's value in the 2011 and 1155 line. Reasons why you might choose a 1155 are (these are generalizations, someone could pick specifics that don't fit)
1. lower total cost. processors cost less as well as motherboards
2. lower thermal - can allow better cooling
3. lower power - save even more money!
4. can actually get better performance on certain applications due to higher clock speeds (again, generalization you can find examples that go against it).
5. Many of the advantages of the 2011 line such as more PCI lanes aren't really of much use for most applications at this time. Running SLI at high resolutions doesn't max out the pipes on the 1155 yet.
6. Quicksync if it's of any use...
Advantages of 2011
1. More cores (depending on chip)
2. More PCI lanes - if you want triple SLI at extremely high resolutions
3. Higher memory capability but only useful really if you need more than 32 gb (supports 64 GB). When 8 GB chips were uber expensive, even at 32 GB or less, I'd give the 2011 the nod for memory.
4. I believe it has more cache in general than 1155 models
I have an 1155 because I was able to get it for almost 1/2 the price of the 2011 at the time and pretty much the same performance for my applications. By the time my 1155 can't cut it anymore, the 2011 lineup will have changed (or there will be a new socket type regardless or now it will be integrated UGGG!). I'm also not sure how well the proposed ivy bridge-e 2011's will be compatible with the sandy bridge 2011. So if you can't use any older 2011 with the newer, doesn't really matter moving forward since you'll have to buy all new regardless.
I'd love to have the extra money for the 2011 but it just didn't make financial sense. With what Spaz is doing, the 2011 makes excellent sense. However, I don't think it can be said that the 2011 socket always makes more sense than the 1155.
