I'm pretty much convinced at this point that some brain tissue is destroyed every time I read an article about congress.

Telcos spend a lot of money on Congress. Good to see that they are getting their money's worth. /sarcasm

Illegal unless you buy an unlocked phone. Or get carrier permission which in most cases will be snowflake/hell.

You can root all you want. UNLOCKING is a different process entirely.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

I'd be curious to see how this plays out in the courts. Rooting serves a lot of the same purposes as unlocking. It allows you to circumvent controls put in place by the carriers to prevent you from doing things.

I think it's a crap decision either way (rooting/unlocking) and is simply another measure for service providers and handset manufactures to effectively force people to upgrade.

It's bad enough that updates on many/most handsets are never realized and so the smart phones fail to take advantage of newer OS features. Forced obsoleting by the carriers imo.

    Ah well.

That's where I'm at with my Galaxy S from AT&T. It's capable of running later versions of Android but AT&T would rather not update it and instead force me to get a new phone and new 2 year contract.
