Ubuntu Email Server

I have a Email server that I setup 2 years ago in a VMWare machine that work. Now I would like to setup a new Email server in virtualbox. I followed the instructions
A Mailserver on Ubuntu 12.04: Postfix, Dovecot, MySQL

I have several issues so I will begin with the first issue. Im have trouble pinging the vbox guest by name. I can see there is issues with name resolution with the guest but I'm unable to find the cure. If anyone has experiance with virtualbox and why I'm not able to ping the guest machine by name I could use some advise.

Manually add an A record in your DNS tables/Cache.

It's probably because your using a bridged nic for your vbox. You need to manually set DNS records for that stuff.

Are you hosting a domain on that vm? IE: mail.slytherndomain.net or something? Do you have the domain hosted elsewhere?

Two options:

1) If you have the domain hosted on that VM and no dns servers set up anywhere else... Set up DNS server on your VM and host your own DNS. When you have that set up, go to wherever you have your domain management at (godaddy or wherever) and set your domain's dns records to point to your VM (ie: your external IP address). Done.

2) If your dns for the domain is hosted elsewhere, go there, manage your dns, and add an A record for mail.domain.com to point to your VM. Then add an MX record to point to mail.domain.com. Done.

Yea I have the A record setup. I,m able to ping the domain. Right now I cannot ping internally to the server name(although I believe this is an arp table issue because when I ping it resolves to ip of old working system which is off during testing. I can ping with IP. Bigger problem is I am unable to telnet to any port ie 25, 143 etc internally. This seems to be a problem with Virtualbox. The working system I have is built in VMWare. I could set this up in vmware but I like that VBox has no limitations for free.

if it's resolving to a different hostname it's dns not arp.. arp resolves ip to mac not ip to hostname.

You may want to try setting up dns on your router instead of your virtual nic. All you have to change at that point is the gateway on your nics.
