So, what do you think, charcoal and pastels?

Have him get himself a little external USB hard drive. He can get all of his pics and whatever else through the Easy Transfer, and use it as a back-up for his new rig when he is done. Most likely it would cost less than a tank of gas.

Re: Need Painless Software Solution For Uncle

    After Action Report:

All suggestions were considered. Decided that the option best suited to the situation was:

    - Windows Easy Transfer

Thanks to Phyrelight, White, Alundil, and Dex, for calling my attention to it. I read the linked documentation on MS's site, as well as the how-to linked by Alundil. The suggestions here preferred to use an external (USB-flash) drive, but that didn't fit my situation. I went with the network transfer option.

My initial impression from the posts here was that even the network option included creating and then transferring some sort of backup file. That turned out not to be the case. The Windows Easy Transfer network option creates a link that eventually puts up on the new machine what is effectively a file browser view to the old machine. The user can select files, directories, apps, and settings with an increasingly fine grain.

For the sake of simplicity, we decided not to drill-down and cull. The entire process cost me about an hour on the phone. Most of that was talking my uncle through installing Windows Easy Transfer on the old machine, going through the steps to get the link set up, and waiting while he swapped the monitor back and forth a few times. The actual transfer of data took about 10 minutes over what I presume was either a gigabit or 100 megabit wired local IP network (which was likely not the bottleneck). The transfer included 3 user accounts.

At the end of the process, the software generates a "report" of sorts which lists what transfered and what didn't.

Thanks for all the other suggestions too. Knowing the range of options helped.

Way back when he got his old XP machine, Firefox was very much the best browser option on Windows. I was there to install and configure it (and add some very useful add-ons) for him. Times do change. What are the reasonable browser options for a new Win7 machine these days?

    Cheers,

    AetheLove

Firefox is still good. I prefer Chrome. Both can be synced across devices IE has gotten better but is still well beneath FF and Chrome. Chrome also has an incognito tab that you can use if you don't want Chrome/Google keeping track of things.

Honestly, if he's used to using FF, I see no reason to switch him around.
