Thread: Mobo and Memory Standard

So I am looking at upgrading my RAM or both my RAM and Mobo. Anyways on to my question.
I have an ASUS M4N98TD EVO and it says that it supports DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1333/1066 but the (O.C.) parts confuses me.
Does that mean that I am able to overclock to take DDR3 2000 or that I can only overclock my RAM to 2000 or that I can just slap some DDR3 2000 sticks in there and call it good?

Also just a question about memory standards in general. Even if my mobo says that it only supports DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1333/1066. Does that mean that I can't just throw in DDR3 whatever and it would just slow down that ram?

Any ram freq above 1333 requires over clocking, but that is a relatively painless process. As to the gains of going beyond 1600, they aren't big enough that the average person will need to worry about.

Putting anything over 1333 in if you don't plan to overclock will be a waste. So plan that accordingly. And make sure you are putting in pairs of dimms as that is a dual channel board.

What would happen if I put something over 1333 in it?

It will just clock down to 1333.

What they are saying is true of your board, but not true of newer processors.

For Bulldozer and Piledriver support DDR3 1866 natively, no overclocking.

For Sandy Bridge, the upper tier supported DDR3-1600 natively and for Ivy Brdige all but the lowest chips support DDR3-1600 natively.

I am only saying this for clarifications sake.
