Thread: Picked up a new TV for myself

I am running movies 100% of the time I am not using it. To get it past the super susceptible period.

Other than that, I am trying to run something full screen most of the time. Internet browser fullscreen, game fullscreen. Ultimately trying to limit the task bar and icons from IR.

The only thing that kinda sucks, is to get a good response time I have to put it into 'PC' mode which disables all the nice picture control settings. And even then the sound is about 290 ms off, and I have to delay the sound to get it to sync up....... online gaming is now much harder than before.....

You are comparing different things. The 240hz is how fast the LCD can refresh the screen. It can only actually receive data at 60hz on any of its inputs. So all the extra time that it can use is interpolating between images.

Same thing for plasma, but it doesn't actually generate an image for every instance it could for those 600hz.

Another things to know is that if you do let the tv do interpolation (often called smooth motion) it gives everything the soap opera effect. Some people like it, some hate it.

The Samsung LED was what we went to purchase. It happened to be on a Monday night and NFL was on. The 65" top of the line samsung LED had horrible tear when the cameras had to pan quickly and it was really bad on white uniforms with the dark green field. The plasma's had none. Nuck, it is all marketing hype. The overall refresh rate is 60Hz on most plasma TVs, but they break it up into 10 independent zones all refreshing at 60Hz, giving them their 600Hz calculation.

I think the 120-240Hz LCD/LED TVs have brighter picture, and look good if you watch TV in a room that is well lit, but their contrast ration is just garbage compared to Plasma. There are pros and cons of both. Either way, the refresh rate is often just marketing bullshit for you to think the higher number is better.

I have a 73" Sharp Aquos LED/LCD. Love it. 240hz. It has that "soap opera" effect. It's something you get used to and when you do you'll never even notice it unless you are looking for it. Just like the DLP rainbow effect. The real number you are looking for isn't the hz rating. It's the Lines of Motion Resolution number. That's not something you'd likely find in the marketing materials.

MOST plasmas are going to be 1000+ lines of motion resolution. A standard 60hz LCD is going to be around 400 or so. Newer LED/LCDs are going to be MUCH better and close to or matching plasmas. So while all tvs are going to get fed 30 or 60fps, it's the way that they are interpolating the data in those "extra" frame refreshes. Plasmas are "flicker" type screens and handle motion very well. LCD's have a hold and release retention that tends to smear an image to our eyes. So the interpolation (and in some brands interpolation plus a "flicker" backlight) is what compensates and determines how well the lines of motion resolution are interpreted by our eyes.

I don't like plasmas much... heat... image retention... etc. But they do have awful nice screens. Given the advances in LED/LCD though I'm perfectly happy with those. (Though I do have a spot in my heart for DLP still.)

I have no complaints about my Samsung LED DLP (other than it's huge in relation to plasma/LCD). I haven't bothered upgrading to anything else because I haven't had a need. Where the TV has to be in our living room, we can't really do a wall mount easily, so the added size of the DLP isn't noticeable because it still has to sit on a small entertainment center. I will likely be in the market for a smaller TV for our bedroom soon. I still have a SD Tube-based TV in our room... We didn't used to watch much TV there, but I've found myself watching more TV in there. I'll likely not be up to spending the extra for a high end Plasma or LCD...

From my understanding plasmas started to go away because they have less profit margin than led/lcd.

Still have my 32" Westinghouse LCD in the bedroom. Running strong for 7 years now...
