I've got a 22" CRT and I think it's great. You're not locked-in to one native resolution and you have a lot more variables to play with to get the color, gamma, white-point, contrast, and brightness right. Plus, you can get them very cheaply nowadays. I got mine from www.Compucycle.net in Houston for $50.
For Christmas I got my fiancee a nice Acer flat-panel which I can appropriate for LAN parties -- this CRT weighs over 60 lbs

id go as big as your graphics card can handle. im 22 inch and id love to go 24 or bigger. widescreen is very nice. i have 5ms and i never see ghosting. make sure to stay under 8ms for gaming...the lower the better. yea, if you can afford it i would say its worth spending 400-500 on a nice monitor.
