U-Verse has been fantastic for me. The latency could be better, and would, if it was fiber all the way. But it has been absolutely rock solid for me, and their service has been outstanding. I like their DVR enough that I said goodbye to my beloved Tivo. I have had it for 5 years now and have had a total of 2 outages. First, I got a dud of a gateway that died overnight. They were out same day to replace it. A couple nights ago I was down for a few minutes and a tech was out the next day to examine everything. So now I have another newer gateway.

I am not sure what to recommend for a router as I haven't really been keeping up, but I loved the Buffalo that I had a while back. I would look for something that you can run DD-WRT on if the built-in software is lacking. It looks like they are actually using that software on their own now: http://www.buffalo-technology.com/te...ftware/dd-wrt/

My thoughts exactly. I LOVED Uverse when I had it, but when we moved they only had Comcast. That only lasted 3 weeks before I called Dish Network. I am a happy camper with DISH and Comcast Internet. Might pay a little more but its worth it for the speed Im getting for internet and the options and user-friendly interface of DISH.

Although traffic shaping may be the superior option, I'd recommend that you just give your PC a static IP and set your router to give it priority. Many (if not most) routers allow you to set a specific IP to a higher priority than other addresses. I've done this a number of times and it works great.

However, you can abuse this if you are playing games and downloading and and and. Suddenly, no one else will be able to use the internet. With great power comes great responsibility

I have three teenage sons and a whopping 1mb pipe. My Asus router with QoS from the DD-WRT keeps my pings low even when they are all "chatting up the honeys" during game time.
