Comcast or UVerse Help?

Lately my internet, DSL 6mb down and 512 up, is really sucking when trying to play. This is mainly because I have my wife and daughters all surfing the net while I am trying to game.

Currently this is the only internet I can get in my subdivision, No Comcast, No U verse.....only DSL.

So my question is who here has knowledge on how I can get one of or both of these companies to upgrade my neighborhood or as with Comcast come into my neighborhood so I can get faster speeds??

U Verse is really still only DSL... You get some faster speeds, but the technology is largely the same. AT&T's marketing of U-Verse makes it out to be 'Fiber internet' and it really isn't. Not like Verizon FIOS.

As for getting them to come in... they'd likely need to negotiate a deal with the city you live in. In Texas, most communities have exclusive franchise rights to provide telephone/cable service. Not much you can do.

You MIGHT be able to get comcast to build out in your neighborhood if you are close to a part of the city that already has it. You'd just have to contact them and ask to talk to someone that is in charge of buildout.

If you order business class sometimes they will do some small amount expansion too. But business class is more expensive too.

Every technician I have talked to from both companies said it takes multiple people from your area inquiring on their site as to if they have service offered. The company monitors and maps those inquiries to get an understanding of where the demand is coming from to plan where theyre expanding.

Not sure how many people you would need (Im sure there is no set amount) but Im sure it would kind of be a door-to-door effort on your part for people to participate.

State of Texas is different than most places. Exclusive franchise rights for telephone/cable providers hamper grassroots attempts like this that work elsewhere...

If you can't upgrade you might consider a router that supports traffic shaping.

shaping basically allows you to create limits based on the type of traffic. So you can say that web traffic will only use 10% of your bandwidth. Gaming takes 85%... and email may take 5%... Or you could shape based on IP... So the wife gets to use 5%... child 5%... and you get 90%...

Yeah, I am aware that Uverse sucks like DSL but I am after more speed. 6m down and a house full of browsing and you tubing and whatnot really kills my gaming.

Currently Comcast and Uverse are in my town in numerous neighborhoods, just not mine. in fact as the crow fly's they are less than 2 miles away from my neighborhood.

I have been thinking of this. Any suggestions on a descent router that will handle this?

I will see if I can get more people in my neighborhood to submit tickets for upgrades.
