    what are the odds (CPU)

so i was trying to get money for a CPU and mobo but maybe i just need the mobo some shop guy said in all his years hes only seen 2 bad cpus

so what are the odds of a cpu going bad?

cause if it still worked a AMD Phenom II X4 955 Deneb 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGMBOX - Newegg.com should still be a decent cpu?

It's kind of on the low end of the spectrum, but it would be a PASSABLE cpu if you don't have the cash for a new cpu and have to stick with AM3+ architecture...

CPU's don't normally take a dump unless they are cooked. IE: the thermal paste isn't applied right or the cpu is overclocked too much and throttling has been disabled (can you even do that??)

How much money were you looking to spend?

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

AM3+ is going to go away. I think later this year, AMD plans on only producing FM2 socket chips going forward.

Voltage can kill a CPU. If your motherboard had issues and could not control the voltage being sent to the CPU, it could have killed it. There likely wouldn't be any physical damage on the CPU... at least any you could see with the naked eye.

It is just HIGHLY unlikely that the CPU is dead unless it has bent/missing pins and is physically damaged. Most of the time, the motherboard will fail leaving the CPU in tact.

Get a used AM3 board off of Ebay.

I have never seen a CPU go bad, I have seen a CPU be bad from the start.

    I have also see:
excessive voltage kill a cpu (broken)
bent pins (broken / unfixable state)
    snapped pins (really unfixable)
cracked heat spreader (and underlying silicone) (really broken)

and I have seen a cpu get static electricity shocked, but still work. (go figure)
