Threads only matter if you video cap, export, or deal with CGI software. Games only take advantage of a maximum of 4 threads on average from what I know. So unless you do more than just games on your PC it's really not going to matter all that much.

That's part of the reason I haven't upgraded yet. Gaming and software development and some minor graphic design right now; but I will be doing a lot of 3d modeling and CGI rendering in about a year. I'll definitely make use of those extra threads

More and more games are taking advantage of multi-threading. BF3, for example, will take advantage of every core/thread you have available. I read somewhere that BF3 has upwards of 40 threads running at one time, which should be able to be processed by a modern quad core. Having more cores/threads just means it will handle the game much easier, and allow your system to have reserve resources to run other applications in the background.
The Metro games are also very resource hungry and gobble up threads. It isn't uncommon to see these games taking more advantage of modern systems if they can. Since most modern games are console ports, there really hasn't been much need for heavily multi-threaded games.
